In case you would like to listen to some funky mellow out music as you look at a slide show put together by a home inspector with too much time on his hands look at the video below. It actually shows a bunch of pictures of strange things that are found on home inspections. The strangest thing I found was a dead body in an attic....well it actually was a life size doll...but who hides a life size doll in the attic? One interesting thing to note if you watch the video below is that each photo has some problem that a home inspector will understand. But as I watch this video with the old old old school music I realize that most people will not notice most of the problems in this video. Can you spot a problem with each picture? If you can you might just be a home inspector checking out my site.
It is estimated that 50% of decks need to be retrofitted because they have been built incorrectly. One main issue is that the way that decks have been attachded to the house has been only with nails. So it would be designed for someone to be sitting on the deck. How about one person jumping up and down. That is a different kind of load force. Add 3 or 4 people jumping up and down on a deck and what do you get? Deck Failure. Check out this video below shot by a group of people filming a party scene for a short video....oops I guess they built that one wrong. If after checking out the video below you don't think you might want to get your deck inspected check out www.deckfailure.com Did you ever wonder what happens if a water heater explodes? One of the parts that is checked on a home inspection is the TPR valve. If this is not on your water heater or is installed wrong think of one word: rocket. The video below explains what could happen when the TPR valve is blocked by an improper installation. Well, check out this video below and you too can have a basic understanding of how it works. How about how do you test your air conditioner? Turn it on. If the air gets cool in the house enough for you it is working just fine for you. Typically a home inspector will look for at least a 15-20 degree drop in temperature when testing the system. But no matter what your home inspector says its up to you if it is enough for you or not. So turn on the air conditioner in that new house you are going to buy and walk from room to room yourself during the home inspection. Same goes for water flow in the shower. I inspected one house and the air conditioner would never get the house below 70. I aske the seller if there was any problem with the AC during the summer months and they said "No, it gets it to 70 just fine. Thats where we have kept it set since we moved in."
